Calls and Mechanics

This is a list of common calls and mechanics that you are likely to encounter during Thursday Night Questing events. Additional mechanics may be announced ahead of a specific event, so this is by no means a comprehensive list. There may be opportunities for PCs to gain access to some of these abilities...

All In The Sound Of My Voice

Like "By My Voice...", but does not include a targeting phrase. All entities which are able to hear the call are affected. If you do not hear the call, you are not affected.

Binding

This effect will typically be granted by a potion created using the regional "Stranger Brew".

Physically binds two small objects to each other, or a small object to a mundane surface. This potion cannot be used on any part of a living/dead creature, nor in any way that bodily restricts the movement of a character or NPC (e.g. binding a boot worn by a person to the ground). The object(s) cannot be separated until one of the objects is broken in-character, such as by a boulder. When applying this potion, attach the material component to the object(s) being affected and remove it if the bond is broken.

By My Voice

This call will always be accompanied by an effect. The source will also include a phrase which targets a group of characters ("By My Voice, All Goblins...") or may point to indicate a specific singular target. The effect applies to the target(s) immediately. If the call is interrupted (e.g. the source dies before it can finish speaking), there is no effect.

The effect which accompanies this call can be blocked separately from the call itself. If the call itself is blocked, the accompanying effect is also blocked automatically.

If you do not hear this call, it does not affect you.

Delayed Damage

An NPC might call "Delayed" immediately after calling damage dealt to them (e.g. "Arm, Delayed"). In so doing, they are indicating that they have taken damage in a hit location, but there is an intentional delay between the moment the damage was dealt and the moment the damage comes into effect. For example, an NPC might call "Arm, Delayed" when they are struck on an arm, but then continue fighting with that arm for several more seconds before losing it. Striking the same hit location multiple times after an NPC calls "Delayed" will not result in additional damage.

Final Strike

This call will always be accompanied by a specified radius ("Final Strike, five feet!"). All characters within the range take a non-magical sword blow to all hit locations, even if they are dead. If you are unsure if you are within the range, assume that you are.

Flight

This effect will typically be granted by a potion created using the regional "Stranger Brew", in which case it expires after 5 minutes.

You are immune to all damage below the waist. You are also immune to damage dealt by a melee weapon 5'0" or less in length. Calls "Flying, No Effect."

Freeze

This call will be used to intentionally stop play for certain reasons, and is lifted by either "Unfreeze" or a Lay-On. Your character does not perceive anything that happens while a Freeze is in place unless otherwise specified. In the event of a safety hazard, a Hold should be called in place of a Freeze.

Incorporeal

Immune to all physical damage. Calls "Passes Through" to indicate that the weapon blow or other effect passes through the body.

Knock-Back

If you are struck by this call, you must take five (5) large steps away from the source. If your movement becomes obstructed (e.g. you back into a wall), you do not have to move any farther. If you feel that it is unsafe to move in this fashion, you may instead choose to drop to the floor and remain there for five (5) seconds.

Blocked by: Protection from Boulder

Might

This effect will typically be granted by a potion created using the regional "Stranger Brew", in which case it expires after 10 minutes.

This ability allows you to lift heavy objects such as boulders. Any heavy object being carried must be held in both hands.

Mold Strike

This effect may be delivered by a weapon or missile blow, which can be parried as normal. Weapon and missile blows deal their normal damage in addition to this effect. It may also be accompanied by a specified radius ("Mold Strike, five feet!") or be preceded by an "All in the Sound of My Voice" call, in which case no damage is dealt, but the effect cannot be blocked.

If you are killed by Mold Strike or affected by Mold Strike while dead, you immediately start taking one soulless-blow per second until you are either raised from death or rendered soulless.

Mold Strike is not a magical effect.

Natural Armor

All of your armor is fully repaired when you are raised from death. Your armor cannot be repaired in any other way. Being made undead does not repair your armor.

Potion of Health

This effect will be granted by a potion created using the regional "Stranger Brew". This potion can only be used on a creature that is currently regenerating. The total duration of the recipient's regeneration effect is reduced by half, regardless of the length of time spent regenerating prior to the application of this potion. If the recipient is more than halfway through their regeneration, then the regeneration completes immediately upon application of this potion.

Reach

A weapon swung with the call of "Reach" is able to deal damage to flying creatures regardless of its physical length. This call may be combined with other combat calls (such as "Armor Piercing").

Rule Of Thumb

The source of this call will make a "thumbs-up" gesture and point it at the target while naming an effect. The effect cannot be blocked or resisted in any way. This is typically reserved for marshaling purposes.

Shatter

This call will be delivered physically (e.g. weapon blow, touch, thrown prop, etc). All items including armor which come into contact with the delivery mechanism are broken in-character. If this call is delivered to a hit location, do not take any damage other than the broken armor.

Blocked by: Protect Item

True Sight

This effect will typically be granted by a potion created using the regional "Stranger Brew", in which case it expires after 10 minutes.

This ability allows you to see through minor illusions such as magical darkness.
